Sheriff hopeful shot in accident

EDENTON — A Chowan County sheriff’s deputy who’s filed to run for sheriff was recovering at a Virginia hospital late Wednesday afternoon after accidentally shooting himself in the hand.
Tim Brabble, 45, was cleaning a .357-caliber Glock handgun when it accidentally discharged, wounding him in his left hand, Sheriff Dwayne Goodwin said.

Brabble was first transported to Chowan Hospital but later transferred to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery, Goodwin said.
Brabble was recovering in a private room late Wednesday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
“He’s doing as well as expected,” Christopher Brabble, the deputy’s brother, told the Chowan Herald. “He didn’t lose any fingers. The doctor said he may have some difficulty with his pinkie finger wanting to cross over. But the doctor doesn’t think he’ll have any problems.”
Chris Brabble said his brother is right-handed.
Goodwin said Tim Brabble was off duty when the accident occurred about 10 a.m. The weapon was not Brabble’s department-issued service weapon, he said.
Even so, the incident will be investigated, as all accidental shootings are, Goodwin said.
Goodwin said the handgun Brabble was cleaning has an unusual cleaning procedure. He said the trigger is engaged to open a glide that sits along the barrel. Apparently, Brabble failed to properly disarm the handgun and it discharged, Goodwin said.
“It’s a terrible design for a gun,” the sheriff said.
Goodwin said he was out of town when the incident occurred. He said he has spoken with Brabble’s family.
It was not clear if the incident would have any effect on Brabble’s bid for sheriff.
Brabble, a law enforcement official since 1997, filed to run against Goodwin, his boss, on Friday. Brabble is seeking the Republican party’s nomination in the May primary. If he wins the primary he will face off against Goodwin, a Democrat, in the fall election.

Both candidates are excellent public staff and do a lot for this community. This accident was unfortunate. We are lucky to have an excellent Sheriff Dept and I hate to see people degrade that office. They put their lives on the line everyday, cause even Chowan can have its dangerous elements! I hope for a good election that doesn't cause any hard feelings for either person

The shot heard around the county!

Unfortunately, this accidental shooting, like it or not, WILL seriously affect the outcome of his campaign. Human nature being as it is, will cause many voters to doubt Mr. Brabble's ability to effectively lead as a result of this incident. Mr. Goodwin is a constant, known by and for his performance to date. Mr. Brabble is a variable, unknown and unproven. There are no serious issues to debate, no major dissatisfaction in the county regarding the present Sheriff, so it will be very hard to unseat this incumbent. Changes are made by voters who are dissatisfied and this is not the case this election year. It's a sad thing, but it looks like Mr. Brabble started his campaign off with a real BANG!

I agree with you, freespeaker. It is hard to beat an incumbent but at the same time the Sheriff has not had any real screw ups in the last 4 years, even though there has not been much done, there has not been any money to do anything. The sheriff has been working on a limited budget with his man hours being watched due to overtime. I am sorry that Deputy Brabble shot himself but if he just skipped the step of unloading a gun then I am worried about what he would just skip if elected to office. The Sheriff has management and budgeting experience both from his past 4 years in office and being Cheif Deputy under the last Sheriff, Deputy Brabble has none of this. I think the voters of Chowan County will vote for what they already know they have instead of change and unknown.

Dwayne and Andy graduated high school together, they both graduated the BLET program at COA together in 1991. They both work great together. Dwayne is the more public person and Andy is more in the trenches. It's a good team with honest men. I have known them both for over 30 years. They are a great team.
