Health Care

Have you noticed? The same folks that are fomenting the noise against a single payer health insurance had no problem with taxpayer funded Federal Flood Insurance.

The following links and commentary were sent to me by an acquaintance. They are presented here with the hope they can help us better understand this vital issue. A clearer understanding will enable you to inform our elected representatives of your informed views.

Somewhere Out There....

Arts & Entertainment

The Edenton Little Theater recently came out of retirement. After about 15 years of dormancy, the members came forward to be counted, and elected officers. Even before that, the members became excited and began planning a production of Neil Simon’s “Plaza Suite,” in October. I plan to direct the play. I say “plan” because at the moment we have an incomplete cast. All the roles, save one, are filled. The exception is a much needed attractive young woman in her twenties or thirties to play the paramour in Act One. A small but significant role.

Improved Health Care Coming?

Letters to the EditorCongress appears bound and determined to reform our health care system. Maybe I overlooked it, but I cannot find any reference to health care in my copy of the Constitution, which every member of Congress has sworn to uphold. Conveniently ignored is the 10th Amendment, which reserves for the States and the people any powers not specifically delegated

State Audit of Chowan Here

Chowan County

Attached here is the State Auditor's Preliminary Report on improprieties associated with the loss of $29 million dollars from Chowan County funds. This report was done with pubic money and should be available to the citizens of Chowan County who are paying (through higher taxes and loss of jobs) for the mistakes made by our public officials. It is up to the new Board of Commissioners to get the bottom of this by continuing legal action against those responsible.

A summary of the audit can be seen here: http://hamptonroads.com/2009/07/audit-no-apparent-criminal-acts-chowan-co

Gardener's Dilemma Solved

Gardening

Tomatoes in abundance? Your cucumbers did not do so well this year? Got a lot of zucchini and wish you had some green beans? Try putting up a note on the new Gardener's Exchange on the Albemarle Web FORUM.

Also, you could donate your surplus to the Food Pantry for Chowan or for Perquimans County. Edenton/Chowan Master Gardeners encourage local farmers and gardeners to participate in the national effort of ampleharvest.org. We can be part of a nation-wide effort to provide fresh healthy foods to our neighbors who are struggling to feed their families.

N.C. Just Can't Kill Navy's OLF Plans

NO OLF BY BARBARA BARRETT - Washington Correspondent for the Raleigh News & Observer

WASHINGTON -- North Carolina's work to squelch a Navy landing strip in the state's rural northeast has hit a snag on Capitol Hill, with the state's two senators unable to push through language to block the development.

U.S. Sens. Kay Hagan and Richard Burr say they will try again this week on the Senate floor after being rebuffed in an earlier Armed Services Committee vote.
